Military Training on DartmoorTraining on Dartmoor, within the National Park, is carefully managed, controlled and supervised by Defence Training Estates, an operational division of Defence Estates. The military have a long history of training on Dartmoor. Troops trained and manoeuvred across Dartmoor throughout the 1800s. Artillery training started in 1873 and Okehampton Camp was built in 1893. Dartmoor made a considerable contribution to training the Allies for D Day, with all of the open land being used for military training. After the Second World War, the area used by the military was reduced to a 13,000 hectares estate, similar to that used now. Today, Dartmoor is used for the training of light forces; those, such as the Royal Marines, who move principally on foot. The management of Dartmoor Training Area is the responsibility of Dartmoor Training Area, which is a part of the Defence Training Estate South West Region. Defence Training Estates is responsible for the management of the majority of the MOD’s rural estate and training facilities. Defence Estates provide the training estate and the strategy for its stewardship, and at local level give advice on its management, and Defence Training Estates commercial partner, Landmarc Support Services plc, which employs the majority of staff, is responsible for making available the training package allocated by the military authority.
