Welcome to the new Dartmoor Training Area website, which seeks to inform you about Dartmoor’s vital role in training the Armed Forces, and our efforts to look after the National Park, provide public access to its wild landscape and support local communities.Military use of Dartmoor helps to achieve the high operational standards required of our soldiers, sailors and airmen. The remoteness, challenging terrain and changeable climate provide vital and demanding training for light Armed Forces such as the Royal Marines and other who principally move on foot. The Ministry of Defence, through Defence Estates’ strategies, has earned an excellent reputation as a steward of its land responsibilities. Conservation is important to Servicemen and women. Understanding cultural heritage, nature, wildlife and farmed stock helps them to live, fight and survive. The Defence Training Estate recognises that it shares Dartmoor with many other users and is considerate of them. Public access is encouraged whenever safety constraints permit. To increase certainty of access, the firing notice is now published 6 weeks in advance. Dartmoor Training Area works closely with the local communities, landowners, farmers, focus groups and statutory bodies. Stakeholders are consulted and kept informed. The Dartmoor Steering Group and its Working Party provide a forum for the key statutory bodies to resolve any potential conflicts between military activities and the National Park purposes. The principle licence for the military to train on Dartmoor expires in 2012. The Environmental Assessment section describes the process being followed to ensure that timely action is taken to re-negotiate licences with the landowners. The latest news and a forecast of events will help you keep in touch with military activities and events. An image library is available for you to access too. The soldiers, sailors and airmen who depend on Dartmoor as an area where
they can develop their operational skills in a challenging and demanding
environment are grateful for your support.
