Dartmoor Training Area Firing Notices

This information is published by the Ministry of Defence. Cancellations are reflected as soon as they are announced. Although every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this web site, the warning signals (red flags by day and red lights by night) must be heeded, as they activate the Military Byelaws and indicate when live firing is taking place

To give greater certainty of access to the one fifth of Dartmoor's open space used for live firing on specified days Guaranteed Public Access (click here) periodshave been agreed. These remain the same from year to year to allow you to plan your walks by giving greater notice of non firing periods.

After detailed programming 6 weeks ahead more days become available and these are shown in the Firing Notice, which may be reduced but will not be increased unless there is a national emergency.

Warning signals, red flags by day and red lamps by night, indicate that live firing is taking place within range boundaries, which are marked with red and white posts. When warning signals are displayed do not enter the range boundary.

If the warning signals are not hoisted by 0900 (Apr - Sep) no live firing will take place that day or night and any bangs you hear will be blank cartridges or fireworks.

"DAY FIRING is between sunrise and sunset. "NIGHT FIRING" is between sunset and sunrise. Warning flags are lowered as soon as live firing has ceased.
