Conservation Overview

Dartmoor’s rugged landscape, splendid natural environment and rich cultural heritage provide a wild, realistic and challenging environment for training the Armed Forces to the high operational standards required. Designation of Dartmoor as a National Park recognises its natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. MoD supports the National Park’s purpose of conserving and enhancing Dartmoor’s environment.

The Defence Estate Strategy commits MoD to safeguard and improve the valued landscape character of its estate; 'maintain and, where possible, enhance this natural heritage’ and to maintain, protect and, where possible, enhance the cultural heritage value of the estate

DTA works closely with DNPA and Natural England to achieve Dartmoor’s Biodiversity Action Plan on its freehold land and to assist landowners of licensed land.

It also works with English Heritage to safeguard Scheduled Monuments and other cultural heritage.

The Dartmoor Traiing Area Conservation Group, consisting of local enthusiasts, provides expert advice, knowledge and assistance with conservation.

A document describing how DTA deals with its responsibilities on Dartmoor is being prepared. This Integrated Land Management Plan sets out how MoD intends to harmonise its responsibilities with other organisations.

Surveys are conducted to inform MoD’s management of its responsibilities. Many surveys have been unertaken in the past and summaries are available.
