Military Use
MIL 1
To deliver to the three Armed Services and their cadet organisations,
cost effective and safe training facilities to enable them to achieve
their objectives.
MIL 2
To maintain and, where possible, improve Dartmoor Training Area’s
characteristic landscape in order to provide the variety of terrain and
man-made features essential for the achievement of light force training
objectives.
MIL 3
To maintain routes and tracks as necessary for the safety and
rescue of military personnel, the distribution of training across Dartmoor
Training Area and the achievement of tactical training objectives.

To ensure public safety before, during and after military training.
MIL 5
To manage DTA and undertake training in ways which ensure that,
where possible, its conservation and access qualities are not diminished
and have regard for the National Park purposes.

Estate Management
EM 1
To ensure that an estate of the right size and quality is available
to support the delivery of military objectives.

To manage and develop
the estate effectively and efficiently in line with acknowledged best
practice and sensitive to social and environmental considerations.

To encourage sustainable agricultural systems in support of public
benefits across Dartmoor Training Area.

To ensure that wherever
possible, clearance of livestock supports both live firing and the delivery
of Environmentally Sensitive Area Scheme objectives.

Nature Conservation and Woodland
NC 1
To maintain or restore across Dartmoor Training Area the full diversity
and extent of moorland habitats, particularly blanket bog, upland and
lowland heath, tors and valley mires, and the transitions between them,
through the continuation and further development of ecologically sustainable
management.

Continue to support the Dartmoor BAP

Maintain and where possible
enhance the current extent and condition of Rhôs pasture on enclosed
freehold land.
NC 4
Re-establish a mosaic of heather of differing maturity
and structural diversity on freehold land.

Maintain and, where appropriate,
enhance or re-establish species rich pastures, including hay meadows
on MOD freehold enclosed land.
NC 6
To encourage the public’s understanding
and appreciation of the wildlife resource of Dartmoor Training Area where
this does not conflict with conservation objectives and landlord agreements.

Maintain the current extent of boundary features across our freehold
land where this delivers cultural, agricultural and biodiversity benefits.

Undertake with stakeholders regular monitoring and research of
habitats and species to inform management for nature conservation objectives.

Area by managing military use of these locations and through woodland
management on Ministry of Defence freehold land.

for the establishment of new native shrub thicket and woodland for military
training on MOD freehold land and where appropriate through landlord

Historic Environment
HE 1
To protect, maintain and enhance Scheduled Monuments across Dartmoor
Training Area.

To protect the historic landscape across Dartmoor
Training Area.

To continue to safeguard Dartmoor Training Areas
significant historic military artefacts.

To undertake and maintain
a condition assessment of key archaeological and cultural heritage features.

within the constraints of military activity and conservation needs.

To reduce visual intrusion of military structures and activities

Resources
NR 1
Ensure that military activities do not impact on the quality or
quantity of surface and ground water within the river catchments across
Dartmoor Training Area.

To protect and maintain the key geological
features across Dartmoor Training Area by ensuring that military activities
do not effect their conservation.
NR 3
To protect soils against erosion
caused by military activities and agricultural practices, access and
recreation on Ministry of Defence freehold land.
NR 4
Reduce, where possible,
greenhouse gas emissions and pollution of air with gas and particulate
emissions.

To improve quality and extent of public access and recreation across
