Soils

The soils of Dartmoor Training Area on the granite are predominantly podzolic mineral soils of the Moor Gate and Hexworthy Associations. Soils of the Hiraethog Association cover much of the area of metamorphic rocks with other podzodic soils of the Moretonhampstead and Parc Associations. The extensive moorland plateau has blanket peat soils of the Crowdy Association. These are rarely more up to 3m in depth as a result of former peat cutting and natural erosion. There are other areas of peat in valley mires and hillside flushes, while brown earth soils of the Denbigh Association are found in the relatively low lying areas.
