Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP)

Socio Economic Effects and Tourism

The villages and towns that surround Dartmoor support a thriving rural community and tourism is an important income stream for local business. The Ministry of Defence, which employs about 80 persons directly on Dartmoor some of whom are farmers, contributes to the local communities through licence payments, employment of staff and contractors and soldiers spend.

In 2004 the Ministry of Defence commissioned Tourism Associates of Exeter University to undertake an assessment of the relationship between the military presence on Dartmoor, tourism and the local economy.

The Study shows that those visiting the moor are not always aware of the military presence and as such military training is not one of the key influences on tourism. While the local community is not dependant upon the military, the Ministry of Defence continues to be an important employer and financial component within the local economy.
