Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP)

Landscape

The characteristic landscape of Dartmoor incorporates a large area of unenclosed moorland, fringed with deep incised stream valleys and a patchwork of small enclosed fields, with associated farmsteads. The landscape character is one of a wild and rugged nature, associated with the UK uplands and is perceived by the local community and visitors to be a significant characteristic of the area.

A closer inspection of the Dartmoor Training Area landscape reveals that, like the remainder of Dartmoor, it is a managed landscape where the characteristics have developed as a result of many and varied previous uses that are maintained by the current agricultural systems.

The baseline landscape for this Integrated Management Plan is therefore the product of many dynamic influences and is still in the process of evolution. The most obvious visual contrast in the landform is between the smooth hills formed in the metamorphosed sandstones and shales, such as White Hill, Willsworthy and the more rugged granite area with its tors and clitter.

The Dartmoor Training Area is all within the boundaries of the Dartmoor National Park and this inclusion is recognition of the national importance of the characteristic landscape of the area.
