Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP)

Estate Management

Land Ownership: The majority of Dartmoor Training Area is licensed from the Duchy of Cornwall, the Maristow Estate and South West Water. Only Willsworthy Training Area is owned as freehold by the Ministry of Defence, amounting to some 1,354ha.

Commoners: The Ministry of Defence works closely with the Dartmoor Commoners and compensates them for disturbance to livestock and for them to be bound by military byelaws.

Tenancies and licences: Formal arrangements are in place with 8 local farmers to use Ministry of Defence freehold and long leasehold land for agricultural purposes.

Casual Use and wider market initiatives: Opportunities to use the Ministry of Defence freehold estate for filming and recreational purposes are all licensed by Ministry of Defence through Landmarc Support Services. Approaches to use the licensed or leased land for such activities are all referred to the land owners.
