Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP)

Access and Recreation

Across the Ministry of Defence estate there is a presumption in favour of public access were ever this is compatible with military training and operational requirements, safety, security, conservation and the interests of our tenants. Dartmoor Training Area provides information within the local papers and radio; a visitor centre at Okehampton Camp; a display in the High Moorland Visitor centre, Princetown, and publishes information much of which is available via the www.dartmoor-ranges.co.uk web site to provide for the safe and informed use of the training area.

In addition, events are arranged to raise awareness of the military association with the area such as the Dartmoor Heritage Weekend. While long standing military training exercises such as Ten Tors (more recently known to Ministry of Defence as Operation Wyvern Tor) and the Jubilee Challenge facilitate the wider use of the moor for up to 3000 people.

Dartmoor Commons Act grants open access for walking and horse riding over common land and these activities are subject to military byelaws. Leaflets for walkers and horse riders are available from Dartmoor Training Area and the Dartmoor National Park Authority.

Dartmoor Training Area Standing Orders state clearly how training soldiers should behave towards the public enjoying the moor with specific reference to horse riders.
